Bugaboo Fox 5 vs UPPAbaby Vista V2: which pram for Auckland living?
The pram decision is the one most parents agonise over longest, and for good reason. It is the piece of gear you will use every single day, in every kind of weather, across every kind of terrain Auckland throws at you. Getting it wrong is an expensive lesson.
The Bugaboo Fox 5 and the UPPAbaby Vista V2 are the two most common answers to this question among parents who have already done the research. Both are full-size prams. Both are genuinely well made. Both hold their resale value better than almost anything else in the category. The choice between them is more specific than most reviews suggest.
The Fox 5 is the better pram for uneven ground. Its suspension system is more sophisticated than the Vista's, and it shows on the kind of footpaths you find across much of Auckland, particularly older suburbs where the pavement is broken, rooted, or simply absent. The Fox 5 absorbs the impact. The Vista transmits more of it. If you walk a lot, push across grass, or navigate anything other than smooth concrete regularly, that difference is noticeable in your hands and your baby's sleep.
The Vista V2 has a clearer answer to the sibling question. Its tandem configuration for a second child is more considered than the Fox's, and the seat and bassinet arrangement in twin mode is more practical day to day. If there is any chance of a second child within three years, the Vista's expandability is worth factoring in from the start rather than retrofitting later.
On boot space, the Fox 5 is the tighter fit. The Vista V2 folds larger overall but the chassis is bulkier to handle. Neither is a compact pram and neither should be mistaken for one. If your life involves a small lift, a tight hatchback, or frequent public transport, a different category of pram entirely may serve you better than either.
Both are worth buying preloved. The Fox 5 particularly so, as its mechanical components are robust and its fabrics clean well. A two-year-old Fox 5 in good condition is a better buy than a new pram at the same price point from a lesser brand.
